Melbourne, the second biggest city in the country, has often been labelled the cultural capital of Australia. It's a thriving metropolis and a centre for education, sport, arts and commerce. It's the unofficial home of traditional Australian music and the birthplace of Australian film and television. The Melburnians, as they are known, are rightly proud of their city, and they know how to enjoy themselves. One such way is to head for the bush, and a 4WD hire Melbourne can take you there.

If you want to join the Melburnians off-road, it’s best to have done your homework, and here at CamperHire.com.au, all that’s left for you to do is fill in the blanks.

What to See in Melbourne

Here are a couple of trips that will make the city seem very far away. Firstly, a visit to the Lerderderg National Park, some 65km from Melbourne, will not disappoint. Load up your Melbourne 4WD hire, head west, put on some Melbourne music and you'll be there in no time. If you like camping, you'll be staying put for a good few days. Pitch up by the Lerderderg River at O'Briens Crossing, where cement camping holes line the riverbank and you can get dinner roasting on a fire. You'll be deep inside a 300m gorge, so mobile phones are out of the question, let alone running water. Or leave the tent at home and hire a cheap 4x4 campervan, they come in handy on this holiday.

The Melbourne area further grew and developed during the Victorian gold rush of 1851, and a short walk along the East Walk Track will lead you to an old water device that was used for rinsing gold way back then. There's good brown trout fishing nearby, or you could wash off the dust of the city with a relaxing swim. Don't forget your camera: you may get to snap a koala or a kangaroo if you're lucky.

A bit further away, some 110km north of the city, is the Lake Eildon National Park - a very pleasant driving experience in a 4WD hire Melbourne. You'll be in the foothills of Victoria's Central Highlands, in altogether more mountainous terrain, with some peaks reaching more than 900m high. If you choose to explore the area on foot, you may just stumble upon old mine shafts used back in the Gold Rush. (Try to stumble upon them and not into them.) Lake Eildon itself is a haven for water sports which include power boating and water skiing, so there's always plenty to do in Victoria's great outdoors.

The form below will link you to a quote on the vehicle you’re after, and you can be off on your Melbourne 4X4 holiday in no time.
